For Immediate Release

Emily Carr To Offer a Master of Design Degree

Graduate Studies Degree First of its Kind in British Columbia

Vancouver, CAN May 6, 2013 | Emily Carr University of Art + Design announces a Master of Design Degree being offered through the Faculty of Graduate Studies beginning in September 2013. For British Columbia, this new graduate degree addresses an important need for advanced design education regionally and will contribute to a strong professional design community provincially. Globally, it will further Emily Carr’s reputation in the field of design pedagogy.

The addition of the Master of Design Degree (MDes), builds on Emily Carr’s successful Bachelor of Design degree, recently ranked #11 in the world by the prestigious Red Dot Organization. It will expand upon curricular values and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, technological intervention, new research methods/approaches to design, and creating creative work within cultural frames of reference.

The MDes is a full time research-oriented, two year degree in interdisciplinary design that challenges the status quo and addresses the continually disruptive nature of design studies by recontextualizing, remixing and reframing design — culturally, ecologically and theoretically. The MDes will expand students’ understanding of design in its contemporary and future contexts. With students’ existing knowledge of design practice as a foundation — which has been gained through undergraduate work and professional practice — this degree pushes the boundaries and purposes of design by integrating design research methodologies within theoretical, experimental and pedagogical frameworks.

Students enrolling in the MDes program can expect to position themselves within a range of design studies including Health Design, Recreation Design, Soft Product Design, Communication Design, Product Design, Industrial Design, Sustainable Design, and Service Systems Design. Students graduating with an MDes will take leadership roles in a multitude of design professions, design research, teaching and pedagogy.

For more information about the Master of Design degree and enrollment for the 2014 cohort please visit the news section of ecuad.ca.

Since the inception of photography, the defining characteristic of the medium has been its ability to represent the real. Technologies such as the lens and camera made focusing light onto emulsion possible. With the ability to capture specific moments in time, the construct of ‘photographic truth’ emerged as a common notion. But as technologies have progressed and as photography has shifted from chemical to digital based mediums, not only has photography become more accessible to the masses, but the image has also become easier than ever to manipulate. With these advancements, the foundation on which ‘photographic truth’ was built has been eroded, leaving the viewer questioning the authenticity of the images.

The artists presented in All That Once Was Will Never Be Again have in many ways rejected the traditional lens based image making of the photographic medium. Patryk Stasieczek and Jacinthe Lessard use analogue darkroom techniques to create their non-representational imagery, whereas Jenny G and Andrea Pinheiro use the photographic image as both the ground for their photographic ‘paintings’, and in Jenny’s case, the paint itself. Laurie Kang has abandoned the photographic image entirely and employs unexposed photographic paper and film to create sculptures and collages.

Photography at its most rudimentary level is a photosensitive material being exposed to light. For these artists, the ‘photographic truth’ does not lay in the capturing of decisive moments, but rather rests in exploring the limits of the materials that make up the medium.

IE, GALLERY PRESENTS

IN THIS WE ARE ARRIVED

This exhibition features objects and artworks that have made the journey to Vancouver as a by-product of relocating to pursue either an MAA or MFA program. Graduate students from ECU, UBC, and SFU have provided objects of transnational origin. These relocated items form a collection of value, activating reminiscence as we adjust to this new psychic geography known as Vancouver, the site of our creative dialogues at the graduate level.

In this we are arrived speaks to those origins and contextualizes them outside of our personal spaces into the public realm. We have, by means of transplantation, activated these things by their conservation and collection. This meaningful attachment that we have by keeping things along through displacement pays tribute to the communities that have nurtured our current state of being. In this we are arrived exhibits these private transplanted objects to honor them in a commemorative space, and to share their significance with a wider audience.

RECEPTION / JAN 31

18H00 – 20H00

Amiel Logan presents his first body of work since entering the Master of Applied Arts program at Emily Carr University of Art & Design.

Amiel has primarily worked through sculptural forms, however in his graduate studies he has moved towards the paintbrush and is focused on creating a completely new body of work. The formal properties in his pieces are of critical significance as they are meditations of presence in each art object.

As a painter, his interests continue to address surface and the undercurrents of energy that flow beneath. In the vein of vein of Richard Serra, Amiel experiences painting as an action. Energy is distilled on the canvas, activating the painted surface and radiating outward. A poem:

intrinsic materials resonate

essential surfaces vibrate

paint as paint

movement without restraint

form to flow

a current draws you out
